St Pauls
St Pauls Cathedral in London is probably built on the site of a Roman pagan temple. In medieval times, the gothic cathedral loomed over the city, and in the days of Shakespeare and the Puritans, great sermons were preached from St Pauls Cross, beside the cathedral. All these developments are described in LONDON from the 'Londinium' chapter onwards. The building of the present St Pauls, after the Fire of London, by Sir Christopher Wren, and the way he concealed the fact that it was to have a dome from the authorities are the subject of the chapter 'St Pauls'.
